Quick Answer: How Often Should I Attend Therapy Sessions? I recommend starting with weekly therapy sessions, ideally for at least 4–6 weeks, to build momentum and create a strong foundation for growth. Weekly sessions help keep conversations alive, allow you to practice new strategies between meetings, and provide consistent support as you explore challenges. Over time, the frequency can shift based on your progress and goals, but starting weekly offers the most effective way to move forward.
If you’re new to therapy or returning after some time away, you might be wondering: How often should I attend therapy sessions? It’s such an important and valid question, and one that doesn’t always have a one-size-fits-all answer. The frequency of your therapy sessions can shape your progress, your comfort level, and how supported you feel while you navigate whatever brought you to therapy in the first place.
When someone asks me “how often should I attend therapy sessions?” I usually share my thoughts based on what I see work well for most people. If you’re just beginning therapy, or it’s been a while since you last went, I typically recommend starting with once-a-week sessions for at least the first six weeks.
Why weekly? Weekly therapy sessions help us build a strong foundation together. Having a consistent time each week gives you something reliable to count on, almost like a ritual for your mental and emotional well-being. It’s also practical, weekly meetings allow us to really dig into what’s happening in your life without too much time passing in between. The momentum we build week to week makes it easier to notice patterns, understand how certain problems show up for you, and experiment with small changes or new ways of responding to challenges.

Just like you wouldn’t expect to get physically stronger by training your body once every couple of months, you probably won’t see meaningful change if sessions are too spread out at the start. Weekly therapy creates enough space for you to process what comes up between sessions, while also keeping you from feeling like you’re starting over each time we meet.
Of course, there are times when “How often should I attend therapy sessions?” might have a different answer. If you’re in the middle of a crisis: maybe you’re dealing with a recent breakup, a major loss, an unexpected trauma, or anything that feels like “too much” all at once, we might meet more than once a week for a period of time. Some clients find it helpful to have two sessions per week temporarily for extra support and stabilization.
Other times, the question is about scaling back. After the initial period of weekly sessions, many clients find that less frequent meetings is appropriate. Maybe we move to bi-weekly sessions, or even once a month for ongoing support and maintenance. This is a conversation we’ll have together, there’s no rigid rule. The goal is to find a cadence that works for you, your goals, and your life circumstances.
Outside of sessions, we also talk about how you can feel supported in between meetings. This might mean identifying supportive people in your life. Especially if you’re in crisis, knowing who your “safe people” are and having a plan for tough moments is just as important as what we talk about in the therapy room.
So, how often should I attend therapy sessions? The short answer: for most people, weekly at first, then we adjust together. My approach is always collaborative, and your input matters. Therapy is your time and your space, and I’m here to help you find what works best for you.
